A Step-by-Step Guide to Build Your First Mobile App

Gaurav Modi,CEO of DMK Group

Mobile app development is an appealing industry to get into and anyone can do it, if they have the time, the programming knowledge, and the ideas. Many people want to create an app because they have an ingenious idea for an app that will solve a problem.

The following are the steps to take during mobile app development process:

  1. Sketch it out. Yup, that’s right. Get out a pencil and a piece of paper and draw out your app. This is a great way to conceptualize what you want to do before you even touch a keyboard.

  2. Do your research to:
    • Determine whether there are other apps out there that do what you want your app to do

    • Get inspiration for what’s out there

    • Gather information on the technical requirements of your app

    • Determine the best way to market your app and make money from it

  3. This step in mobile app development requires you get on your computer and develop a wireframe mockup and storyboard that will help you layout your app. There are tools that will help you with this and many of them are free. Check out some of the most popular software, such as HotGloo and Balsamiq.

  4. Take the time to look over your wireframe mockups and storyboards and identify features that are not in line with the core functionality of the app. This is an important step in mobile app development because apps must be streamlined to focus on one key function and perform that exceptionally well. You also must make sure to look beyond just the aesthetics of the app and ensure the design of the app takes into account user experience.

  5. Plan out the backend of the app. This includes sketching your servers and APIs and creating data diagrams. This will help you perceive technical limitations and allow you to adjust your storyboard and mockups accordingly.

  6. If you do not already have a developer account, whether you are developing iPhone apps or Android apps, you will need one before you can actually create the app. Get the necessary account set up so you can build the app.

  7. Once you have a prototype ready, test it! You can ask friends, family, and colleagues to try out your app prototype and give you feedback. This will help you determine what needs to be changed or fixed to get rid of flaws and ensure the app runs as intended.
